Felix Maschewski

Felix Maschewski is a literary, media and cultural theorist. He is Co-Director of the Critical Data Lab, an affiliated researcher at the Institute of Network Cultures (Amsterdam) and a regular teaching affiliate at Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Prior to that he held visiting and teaching positions at FU Berlin , at Princeton University and at the University of Basel.

Felix has published widely on the power of Big Tech, the politics of social media, the platform economy, AI ideologies, the rise of immersive tech, and the digital transformation of the public sphere. His work has been published in journals such as Philosophy & Social Criticism, Thesis Eleven, Digital Culture & Society, Jahrbuch Technikphilosophie, Leviathan, Behemoth, Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft and various edited volumes.

Apart from his academic writing (a.o. in Behemoth, Leviathan, Thesis Eleven, Jahrbuch Technikphilosophie, Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft), he regularly writes essays for Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Republik, Wirtschaftswoche, Philosophie Magazin, DIE ZEIT, taz, Surplus, among others. He has also published widely in international media, including Dissent, Jacobin, Internazionale, Le Temps, Nueva Sociedad etc.

His most recent book is Die Gesellschaft der Wearables (co-authored with Anna-Verena Nosthoff, Nicolai 2019). He is also co-editor of the Behemoth special issues „Futures of Critique in the Digital Age“ and „Algorithms and Alterity“ (2022). At the moment, Felix is working on a forthcoming book on the space exploration visions of specific figures in the techno-authoritarian constellation, which is under contract with Matthes & Seitz (forthcoming in 2027).

Felix is the recipient of the Surveillance-Studies-Prize 2021 (category: academic publications) and the Prize for Philosophical Essays awarded by the Forschungsinstitut für Philosophie Hannover in 2019. Felix’s journalistic work was also shortlisted for the Surveillance-Studies-Prize (category: journalistic publications) in 2021. As an expert Felix has spoken at numerous academic and non-academic institutions, including the UN. He also held one of the Mosse Lectures at Humboldt University Berlin in 2023.
